The 12 local citation sites that actually move AI rankings in 2026
Not every directory is worth the effort. Here are the 12 citation sources AI engines cite most for local businesses — ranked by observed citation frequency across 500+ prompts.

We analyzed AI-engine citations across 500+ local business prompts — restaurants, contractors, dentists, salons, gyms, lawyers, medical, home services — to find the directories that actually get cited. This is the ranked list, plus how to prioritize them for your category.
How we ranked them
For each of 12 categories × ~4 cities, we ran 30 prompts across ChatGPT (with browsing), Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. We logged every citation URL, deduped by domain, and scored each source by:
- Citation frequency — how often did it appear across prompts
- Citation weight — was it the primary source or one of many
- Cross-engine consistency — did all three engines cite it, or just one
The result is the list below, grouped into three tiers of practical priority.
Tier 1 — cited on most local queries (do these first)
1. Google Business Profile
Not technically a citation site, but the entity every AI engine anchors on. Non-negotiable. Complete every field, add products/services, respond to Q&A, post monthly.
Signal that moves the needle: review recency + posting activity in the last 30 days.
2. Yelp
Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AIO for restaurants, salons, contractors, gyms, and most services. Review recency matters more than raw count.
Signal: at least one review per month; response rate to reviews.
3. Google Maps
The reviews and Q&A on your Maps listing feed both Google AIO and secondary engines. Photos matter more than most people realize — geotagged, recent photos strengthen the entity.
Signal: photo cadence, Q&A responsiveness, category specificity.
4. Better Business Bureau (BBB)
Cited heavily for service businesses (contractors, movers, financial, home services). An A+ rating is worth the setup time; complaints without responses actively suppress you.
Signal: rating + zero unanswered complaints in the last 12 months.
Tier 2 — cited on category-specific queries
5. Angi (was Angie's List)
Home services (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, remodel, roofing). Very high AI citation share, especially for ChatGPT and Perplexity emergency-service prompts.
6. HomeAdvisor / Thumbtack
Handymen, cleaners, movers, contractors, tutors, event services. Both engines cite these. Thumbtack is rising fast for micro-service categories.
7. TripAdvisor
Restaurants, hotels, attractions, tour operators, breweries. Massive Perplexity weight. AIO cites for travel queries.
8. OpenTable / Resy
Restaurants. Increasingly cited as booking-intent signals. Being on the platform + having recent availability signals a real, operating business.
9. Healthgrades / Zocdoc
Medical (dentists, doctors, therapists, chiropractors, PT). Zocdoc's insurance filter data is heavily used by AIO for "…that takes [insurance]" queries.
10. Avvo / FindLaw / Justia
Legal. Avvo's rating and endorsements are cited disproportionately vs its size.
Tier 3 — high leverage but underused
11. Local subreddits (r/[yourcity], r/[yourneighborhood])
Perplexity and ChatGPT increasingly cite genuine Reddit threads for local recommendations, especially for restaurants, contractors, mechanics, and hair salons. Participate authentically over months; do not spam. A single mention in a comment thread often outweighs a directory listing.
12. Local news / independent blogs
"Best X in [city]" roundup posts on local news sites (Eater, Thrillist, DoNYC, Chicagoist-style outlets) and independent blogs are goldmines. One good roundup mention = five directory listings. Pitch these publications 4–8 weeks before their annual/quarterly updates.

What we removed from the list
These used to matter; they don't anymore:
- Yellowpages.com — near-zero AI citation share
- MapQuest — same
- Foursquare — dropped hard in 2024
- Manta, Merchant Circle, Cylex, Hotfrog — spammy signal, rarely cited, occasionally suppressive
- Generic 500-citation packages — the "network" of low-DR directories included in most local SEO bundles adds almost nothing in 2026
If you're paying for any of the above, that budget is better spent on Tier 1 review campaigns or Tier 3 pitches.
The action list
- Fix your Tier 1 immediately (GBP, Yelp, Maps, BBB) — full completeness, current photos, monthly activity
- Add Tier 2 relevant to your category — usually 2–3 sources
- Pick 1–2 Tier 3 opportunities per quarter — a Reddit presence, a local blog pitch
- Ignore packages that promise "500 citations" — quantity is not the game anymore
- Track weekly — the citation set drifts; watch which source powers your mentions this month vs last
Common mistakes
- Setting and forgetting. A completed listing that hasn't been touched in 18 months slowly becomes an "old" signal.
- Buying reviews. Fake review clusters get detected and suppress you.
- NAP drift. Every listing must match to the character — including "Ste" vs "Suite" and phone formatting.
- Skipping Tier 3. Reddit and local editorial feel unfamiliar, so most businesses skip them. That's precisely why they're leverage.
AI Ranker's citation opportunity finder surfaces the exact Tier 1–3 sources cited for your specific business and category — and diffs them weekly so you notice the shift before your rankings do.
Frequently asked questions
- Which directories still matter for AI search in 2026?
- Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, and your top 2–3 industry directories (Angi, Healthgrades, Avvo, TripAdvisor, etc.) drive the majority of AI citations for local businesses.
- Do generic mass citation services still work?
- Not really. AI engines weight a small set of high-authority sources heavily and largely ignore low-quality directory farms. Depth on Tier 1 sources beats breadth on Tier 3.
- How often should I audit my citations?
- Full audit twice a year. NAP consistency spot-check quarterly. Any time you move, rebrand, or change hours, update every Tier 1 listing within a week.
- Are reviews part of citations?
- Effectively yes for AI search. Recent, detailed reviews on Tier 1 directories are one of the strongest signals AI engines use when deciding which local businesses to recommend.
